- NIDDM is a significantly public health problem in the Sultanate of Oman.
- Based on 1991 regional DM survey in Omani population of age above 20 years indicate that 10.5% are DM, and about 10.5% are IGT.
- Only one-third of diabetic subjects knew that they had diabetes.
- The survey found that diabetes was more common in the city area rather than countryside.
- High rates of overweight and obesity in the population will make diabetes to be a major health problem in Oman.
